During the Walt Disney Parks and Resorts Presentation at D23, Disney announced some huge changes to EPCOT (Read about those HERE), but with those announcements they released concept art of the new Future World. There was a lot of unannounced stuff in this picture that I want to talk about.
To begin, this is the concept art that was shown at D23:
1. Innoventions Will Be Demolished and Turned Into a Park
Looking to the center of the image first, it appears that Innoventions, the mostly vacant dated looking buildings that currently lay in the center of the park, will be demolished. The picture shows a park, complete with tons of trees and water, in its’ place. the Fountain of Nations will also be removed as a part of this park, and pathways will be changed. Overall, I feel as if this is a good change, as it will direct traffic to the pavilions better than before, and looks way nicer from above.
2. A Mess of Trees to the Left and Right of the new Park
Looking to the left and the Right of the park, it appears as if a new very wooded/shaded area will be created which connect the pavilions. The areas look a bit confusing, but seem really nice. The water in the areas also seem nice. Overall it adds to a very beautiful aesthetic, at least from above in this rendering. The modern sculptures which may be visible add to the beauty, in my opinion.
In conclusion, Disney thinks the future is trees.
3. A Hedge Maze next to The Land
On the far left of the concept art, there lies what appears to be a maze. Disney has plenty of hedge mazes in its’ parks around the globe, so it would make sense that they would bring one to one of their domestic parks. Whether it will be popular in Florida is another story. I don’t think they’re as popular in the States as they are elsewhere, but we’ll see I guess.
4. Guardians of the Galaxy Ride Aesthetic
With a new ride coming to the Universe of Energy, the aesthetic of the building won’t change much, but a new color scheme will be put into place: all gray.
While I hate everything about this ride, the color scheme is fine: it fits the gritty reality Disney fans are facing about the ride.
5. Wonders of Life Remains
I might be less insulted by the replacement of Ellen’s Energy Adventure if Disney actually decided to use their mostly abandoned Wonders of Life Pavilion. It was rumored the GoTG ride would take up both of the spaces, but this concept proves that to be untrue.
Nothing is happening to the dead pavilion. It’ll remain there in all of its’ semi-abandoned glory.
6. World Showcase Lake Expanded and New Fountains Added (Possibly for IllumiNations 3.0?)
Looking at the bottom left of the picture reveals that the lake that stands in the middle of World Showcase will be expanded to engulf the two small lakes that currently reside between Future World and World Showcase. the monorail will go over the lake, and paths over the water will now connect FW to WS. In this new section of the lake are fountains, which could (And probably will) be used for the next Nighttime Show at Epcot, which wasn’t announced at D23.
7. Leave a Legacy Gone?
Zooming in on the front entrance of Epcot reveals that the Leave a Legacy Gravestones may have been removed. This would make sense, as they look awful. You can’t really tell, but there’s a good chance these will be removed.
8. New Futuristic Buildings
In the concept, you can see four new buildings, which all look really futuristic, fitting the theme of Future World. Two are small, probably for small shops, one seems slightly elevated or fenced off and could be a restaurant, and one is on the lake(!). These will probably serve the same purpose that Innoventions served in the last years of its’ life: shopping.
9. New Nighttime Color Schemes
Looking at the lighting on the trees, it seems that Future World East and West will have different color schemes, with West being green and East being red. Spaceship Earth may have more colors on it, too, including GOLD.
10. New Entrances to Wonders of Life and Test Track
It seems as if Test Track will get a new entrance, located slightly west of the original one (I could be very wrong, but that’s what it looks like to me)
UPDATE: After looking at it, Test Tracks entrance may not be moved. You can see a little bit of the original entrance in the concept.
Wonders of Life will now have two paths leading to the entrances, which don’t wind as much as the current one does.
Those are the changes I’ve found within the fairly low-res concept art. I can’t wait to see what the new Future World will look like in person, because in concept, it looks amazing!
Except for the Guardians ride. Everything about it is REALLY stupid, including the plain gray color scheme.
